It's 1933, the Depression has been going on for years, nobody has any hope and about the only people anyone looks up to are gangsters, two-bit desperados, singing cowboys, and snake-oil salesmen who preach Jesus and sexual rejuvenation practically in the same breath. Into this screwed-up world come God and the Devil, or at least two guys very much like them, searching for a virtuous man that they can place bets on. It's a mystery why they picked Herbert T. Barrow as their object. True, he was virtuous, but he was also an escaped convict, a dope-smoking jazz musician, and an atheist. It was their big mistake.
